Undetected general insurance claims fraud total around £1.9billion a year.

This figure adds an average of approximately £44.00 per annum in additional outlay to an individual policyholders insurance policy portfolio.  These figures just account for the undetected claims, so it is no surprise that Private Investigators are kept busy in gathering evidence to assist ensurers to police at least a decent proportion of the fraudulent cases.

To establish that a dishonest claim has taken place, some substantive evidence of lies, inconsistent statements or acts of deception must be present. The essential components of fraud are the intent to deceive and the desire to induce the firm to pay more than it otherwise would. Most major insurance companies have a fairly elaborate risk indicator system that will identify potentially fraudulent claims and based on this analysis, private investigators may be instructed to investigate.

Insurance fraud claims may relate to personal injury, long-term sickness or redundancy or even on occasion death duties. In most cases covert video evidence will be required that will clearly show that a claimant is either working when they should not be, conducting tasks that are at odds with their injury or illness or even in the case of a feigned death, to show that the subject of the claim is still alive. Covert surveillance will quite often be followed by an official interview of the claimant to establish certain facts that will support the case.
