Listening Devices
In the investigation industry the phrase ‘listening device’ describes a piece of equipment that has been designed or adapted to enable remote audio surveillance of a room or a vehicle.
Todays listening equipment is based around mobile phone technology and this means that remote listening can be achieved on a global basis rather than the short range devices that were available previously. The technology is now becoming incredibly small more elaborate. The latest listening devices available are disguised as everyday objects such as key fobs and mobile phone batteries, but they are also incorporated into mains powered devices such as double plug adapters.
The use of listening technology is sometimes crucial in an investigation. Often the use of this type of audio surveillance apparatus will prove invaluable to gather information and intelligence prior to embarking on a full staffed surveillance operation. Most modern covert listening products are very simple to use, although some devices do require specialist fitting. Listening devices are on the whole not designed to record audio for evidential purposes, however, recording can be achieved if necessary.
